Putts & Pars 12/05/25

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

It sems a very long time since we had some actual golf to report on, however there was some respite to this seemingly no end to wet weather, with a competition possible last Saturday.  Despite the difficult conditions a field of 59 starters took up the challenge and surprisingly the scores achieved were rather impressive on a very wet Grafton Golf course.

When your playing handicap is just one, you are expected to play well each and every time you play the game.  That was the circumstance with Greg Harvison, a past Club Champion, who put together a remarkable round to record a winning score of 41 points for the 18 holes.  Greg got off to a great start on the front 9 with 22, made up by 5 birdies, 3 pars and just the on uncharacteristic bogey on the 1st.  The back 9 resulted in a further 19, with 7 pars, 1 birdie and just the one blemish on the 18th hole, making up the total of 41.  For people who like to know such details, Greg’s 41 equates to a 4 under par of 68 off the stick, a great round considering the prevailing conditions.

Two playesr, Damian Blair (11) and Karl Studd (18) recorded the next best scores with 39 against their names.  As a result of their efforts, Damian was awarded the win in Division 1, with Karl a easy winner in Division 3.  Runner-up to Damien was Tim Gooley (11) with 37, Karl established a 3 point margin over his nearest rival, Michael Hughes (22) who recorded 36 for the runner=up spot in  Division 3.  Division 2 was won by Greg Tozer (16) with 37 from James Hough (14) a visitor from Pine Rivers Golf Club with 36.

In the nearest the pin component of the competition, Dennis Pye (16) secured the Pro pin on the 1st, his tee shot just 161cm from the cup.  Karl Studd added to his competition trophy haul for the weekend with the prize on the 6th, his tee shot just 283cm away.  Tim Gooley also added to his trophy haul by claiming the prize on the 10th.  On the 17th it was David Wilks (14) who got the cash, his tee shot in 107cm away.  There were 30 pro balls issued, going down to those on 28 on a countback.

Last Saturday’s competition was the first official event since 24th April due to the extraordinary wet weather.  The outlook for the rest of this week is rather bleak, however the course will be evaluated ezch day and a decision if any golf is possible with the advised through the Club’s Facebook and web site accordingly.

The casualty list of cancelled or postponed events continue to grow with the Veterans Championships which were scheduled for 20th & 27th May have now been postponed to a date yet to be decided.  Unfortunately the weather is out of everyone’s control, we can only hope for significant improvement sooner rather than later, and we can resume our normal golfing activities.

There maybe little golf to report on, however there is one Club competition that receives vry little exposure.  That is the Club Footy tipping competition with 40 club members participating.  Following the completion of 10 rounds of the NRL, leading the tipping competition at this time is Andrew Barratt with 100.  Next best is Rhonda Studd with 96 followed by Neil Hayward with 94.  Seventeen rounds remain therefore plenty of opportunity for those outside of the three to improve their scores and feature in the final results.
