Putts n Pars - 3rd April 2023

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club - 3rd April 2023

Weekend Golf

One of the most sought after trophies of our golfing programme is the Monthly Mug. That was more than confirmed last Saturday when 121 starters took up the challenge in the Tomsys Timber sponsored event, conducted by Grafton Golf Club. The grade numbers were also very impressive with 33 players in ‘A’ grade, 33 in ‘B’ grade the remaining 55 players making up the field in ‘C’ grade. At the conclusion of play, it was Grafton’s popular plumber, Craig Woods (14), who was awarded the April Mug with a very good score of 68 nett, although Craig had to withstand a strong challenge from Kevin Vaughan (34) who also put in a score of 68. However Craig’s back 9 score of 39 gross which equates to 32 nett was far too strong for Kevin to overcome. Craig deserved the win as he is not only a strong supporter of Grafton Golf as a player, he also supports the Club as a sponsor, that sponsor association spanning many years. For his effort of 68 Kevin was recognised as the winner in ‘C’ grade from Rob Hull (19) who put up a strong challenge for mug honours with 69. In ‘A’ grade it was Matt McKee (2) who secured the win in that grade with 70 from Jackson Wright (plus 1) who recorded a two under par 70, resulting in a nett score of 71 on a countback from David Green (8). Scores at the top of ‘B’ grade were also tight, with Dean Sing (12) cooking up a challenging score of 69 to claim that grade over Allan Donaghey (15) who finished strongly with 70 against his name, just edging out David Morgan (13) on a countback.

Dean Sing was just a little unlucky not to claim the Pro pin on the 1st with his tee shot finishing 122cm from the cup, however Simon Loadsman (5) had other ideas and secured the Pro pin prize when his tee shot finished 98cm away. The nearest the pin on the 6th went to Matt Worthing (2) with the 10th going to Jim Packwood (22). Danny Li (5) is no stranger to nearest the pin trophies picking up the prize on the 17th his tee shot finishing 150cm short of the cup. Should you have recorded a score of 75 or better you have secured yourself a pro ball for that effort.

The next monthly mug is scheduled for Saturday 6th May, and on this occasion sponsored by electrician, Daniel Usher.

Weekday Golf

The Tuesday golf fields continue to remain strong with 89 starters contesting the members and Veteran competitions last week in which two players at the top end of the leader board on 40 points. Gary Pym (24) eventually was awarded the win from Daniel Blackman (7). Following those two players there were four golfers all on 39, Bradley Deece (9), Richard Maguire (22), Bill Dudgeon (15) and Clive Taylor (16) with Brad gaining the 2nd runner-up spot following the countback. Pro balls going down to those on 32 or better. A total of 81 Veterans contested the Veterans Medley event which is held in conjunction with the members competition in which Gary Pym was the winner of that division with his 40 points. Bradley Deece was awarded the 1st runner-up spot with Richard Maguire picking up the 2nd runner-up prize for this 39. Pro balls to those good players on 30.

Michael Johnston (14) a visiting golfer from Safety Beach Golf Club was the best of the 51 players on Thursday’s competition with 39 points against his name. Greg Harvison (1) was the next in line with 37 from three players with 36. They were Clint Corbett (7), Daniel Blackman (7) and Tony Gallagher (8) with Clint eventually being awarded the 2nd runner-up spot. Pro balls going down to 32 on a countback.
