Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Mid-we Competitions

Stroke play was the order of the day last Tuesday in the Members/Veterans competition which incorporated round one of the Veterans Club Championships. Overall, there were 105 starters which included 92 Veterans. Results in both divisions were identical. Scores on the day were impressive, with the winning score achieved by Deano Hayes (18) being 65 nett. Brian Napper (12) was next in line with 66. They were followed by three players, Peter Hackett (30), Norm Burt (16) and Ian Langley (11) all recording 67. At the completions of the countback process it was Peter who was awarded the 2nd runner-up spot. The Veterans nearest the pin prizes went to Dan Smidt (17) on the 1st, Mark Robson (16) the 17th, Dougie Hughes (10) the 4th and Leon McPhee (8) the 14th. The “all in” nearest the pin awards went to Alf Groves (12) the 6th and Andrew Connor (18) the 10th. Pro balls went down to 76 on a countback for the Vets and 74 in the members division.

The Thursday competition was also a stroke event, being the March round of the Tallowood Challenge. The winner on this occasion was Stephen Hancock (14) with an outstanding score of 66 nett, three strokes clear of his nearest rival, David Morgan (13) with 69. The 2nd runner-up spot went to Stephen Tracey (19( with 70. The nearest the pin prizes went to Woolgoolga’s John Thompson (9) on the 1st, Sebastian Cox (1) the 6th, Stephen Hancock (14) and overall winner on the 10th and Matthew Worthing (7) the 17th. There were 15 Pro balls on offer going down to 74 on a countback.

Weekend Competition

The Saturday competition field was comprised of 113 starters, a little less than normal with a large contingent of our regular Saturday golfers travelling to Brisbane’s Virginia Golf Club for the normal inter-club competition. The best score on the day was achieved by Jamie Stockton (16) with 40 points. Jamie’s card reveals he had 19 around the front and backed that up with a further 21 around the back 9. The only blemish in his round was a uncharacteristic wipe on the 1st, which obviously was not a positive start to his round, which he was able to overcome. In division one there were 38 starters from which Jason Casserly (10) posted the winning score of 39 just the single point ahead of Max Forwell (8) with 38. The division two component was made up with 34 starters, where we find Terry Brooks (14) with the leading score of 37 from John Macpherson (18) on 36. Division three had 41 starters with Tony Miller (28) achieving the leading score with 39 from Will Cameron (20) on 37. Pro balls went down to 34 on a countback and the nearest the pin prizes went to Tim Brtlett (3) on the 1st, Matthew Worthin (7) the 6th, Will Cameron (20) the 10th and Jim O’Donohue (9) the 17th.

Also don't forget to see the weekly retrospective write up in Clarence Valley Independent, which is still sold around the place for $2. What a bargain.
