Mid-week Competitions

There was a big turnout of players last Tuesday for the Members/Veterans competitions, those numbers boosted by a large contingent of Glen Innes taking part to contest the annual interclub competition for the Clayden Shield. In the Veterans component of the competition, which was a medley event, there were 104 starters with the winner of that division being one of our women golfers, representing Grafton, Sue Blake (31), who put together a great score of 41 points, establishing a two-shot buffer over her nearest rivals. A group of four players were next with 39 and included Scotty Scott (29), Doug Clark (21), Bill Bishop (13) and Neville Higham (17). Following a rather complicated countback process, Scotty and Doug were recognised as the first and second runner-up winners respectively with Neville having to be content with a Pro ball for his effort. The Veteran’s nearest the pin awards went to Allan Collins (19) from Glen Innes on the 1st, Mick Gane (11) the 17th, with Brett McConnell (7) claiming the 14th. The 4th hole was out of play. Pro balls for the Veteran’s went down to 31 on a countback. As far as the Clayden Shield was concerned the Grafton Golf Club was successful in securing the Shield from Glen Innes. Results in the members division were similar to Vets with Scotty Scott, Dough Clark and Bill Bishop claiming the top three spots. The “all in” nearest the pin awards went to Ken Watt (24) on the 1st with the ultra-reliable nearest the pin winner Mick Craw (1) adding to his record on the 10th. Pro balls went down to 34 on a countback.

The September Tallowood Challenge was held on Thursday in which there were 52 starters. With a gross score of 83, Karl Studd was declared the winner following the application of his 14 handicap which resulted in a nett score of 69. There were three players two shots in arrears to Karl with a score of 70. They were Robert Perl (16) and Sebastain Cox (1) who were awarded the 1st ad 2nd runner-up spots respectively with Neville Gilbert (22) the first player in the ball rundown for his 70. Mick Carter (6) won the nearest the pin on the 1st, Mark Hackett (10) claimed the 10th, Glen Jackson (18) the 17th. Pro balls went down to 74 on a countback.

Weekend Competitions

The Saturday competition was well supported as usual with 120 starters in the President’s 18-hole Stableford. The leading score on the day was achieved by Jim Cross (24) with a score of 41 points. Jim commenced his round with a modest 18 on the front 9, however with a outstanding 23 around the back 9 enabled him to claim the victory with undue fuss. Division one was won by Michael Gane (11) with 37 from Adam Ulrick (4) on 36. Henri Arnold (18) with the second-best score of the day with 40 took out Division two from Brett Paxton (18) 37. A countback was required to sort out Division three with Brian Hewitt (29( declared the winner over Noel Allen (24) both players recording 38. There were 30 Pro balls on offer going down to 33. The Pro pin on the 1st went to Greg Harvison (1), 6th went to Dwayne Doyle (11), 10th Neville Gilbert (21) and the 17th claimed by Robert Usher (18).

Junior Classic

Also on Saturday, the highly prestigious and honoured Tim Schaeffer Memorial Junior Classic was held with 55 young golfers displaying their golfing talent. George Jones from Lismore won the gross component of the tournament with a two under par 70. The nett winner from Kyogle was Jack Mariconte with 67. Lukas Hull won the Tim Schaeffer Memorial Shield as the best performed Grafton junior with 73 nett. The 9-hole winner was Cooper Arthur with 40 gross representing Ocean Shores. The winner of the 5-hole event with 27 gross was Lewis Ulrick, which without doubt is a positive start to a long and successful golfing career.

Mixed Golf

On Sunday, a mixed 2 person Ambrose was held in which Gary Nichols (190 and Vivienne Nichols (12) were the victors with 62.25 nett. With a score of 71 gross, which resulted in a nett score of 65.5 Brian Napper (12) and Heather Purtill (10) were recognised with the runner-up position. The nearest the pin awards went to Craig Haase (13) & Donna Carter (16) the 1st and the 10th went to Brian Napper and Heather Purtill the 10th. The passionate group welcomed Rick and Linda Woelfl, newcomers to mixed golf and hope they enjoy many more mixed competitions.
