Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Weekend Competition

Despite being a holiday long-weekend, a good file of 111 starters took the opportunity to contest a 18-hole single Stableford. The field was made up by 41 Division One players, 36 Division Two with a further 34 players in Division Three. Dominating the field was Barry Godwin (17) with a impressive score of 41 points. Barry played consistent golf recording 21 on the front 9, followed by a further 20 on the back 9. Barry’s card reveals seven pars, a birdie on the 5th and a unfortunate wipe on the 12th. However, he still managed to establish a three-point margin to a group of five players who all finished with 38, all five featuring in the results. In Division one it was Karl Studd (12) who came out on top with his 38 on a countback from Andrew Sear (12). Karl added to his trophy haul for the weekend with the nearest the pin on the 10th. Division Two was taken out by Glenn Roots (16) with 38 from Michael McKee (16) with 37. As a bonus Glenn also took out the nearest the pin prize on the 6th. Once again, a countback was required to sort out Division Three, with Billy Warren (41) claiming the top prize from Rob Hull (20) both players recording 38. The two remaining nearest the pin holes were taken out by Brad Mostyn (6) on the 1st and John Thompson (6) on the 17th. To secure one of the 30 pro balls on offer you required a score of 34 or better and that was decided by a countback as well.

Out of interest being a holiday weekend, the field included 10 visiting golfers representing Clubs such as Mackay, Shortland Waters, Maclean, Terry Hills, Balina, and Cromer. No doubt all those visitors would have let the course with a very positive opinion of the course conditions and presentation.

Mid-week Competition

There were 93 starters in Tuesday’s member/veteran competition with 81 veterans competing in that Division. Taking out the top prize in both the Veterans and Members competitions with a exceptional score of 44 points was Jim Packwood (19). Jim’s blemish free round was made up with 23 on the front 9 and 21 on the back 9. Runner-up in both Divisions was Geoff Shepherd (26) with 42, Glenn Jackson (18) was awarded the 2nd runner-up spot in the Veterans with 40. The 2nd runner-up spot in the Members was won by visiting golfer Grant Titman (2) with a well-constructed 41. Grant, a regular visitor to our curse represents the SSA Golf Club. Grant’s father-in-law, Trevor Townsend (19) was awarded the nearest the pin “all in” hole on the 6th, with Mick Craw (1) claiming the 10th. The Veterans nearest the pin prizes went to Mark Newman(20) on the 1st, Paul Starr (13) the 17th, 2nd shot on the 4th went to Peter Tziavaras (16) with Robert Usher (18) on the 14th.

Robert Perl (16) was the dominant player in the Thursday competition, smashing the entire field with 45 points, four points clear of his nearest rival and one of Grafton’s leading golfers, Greg Harvison (2) with 41. Greg did pick up a couple of bonus prizes with the nearest the pin on both the 1st and 17th holes. The 2nd runner-up prize was won by Kingsley Smith (10) with 40. The two nearest the pin awards Greg did not win went to Shane Essex (10) the 6th and Neville Gilbert (21) the 10th. There were 20 Pro balls on offer going down to 34 on a countback.
