Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Weekend Competition

The main focus in this week’s golf was of coarse last Saturday’s July Monthly Mug, for which there were 125 starters in the Craig Woods Plumbing sponsored event. Being a Mug event, played under the stroke format, the course was set up with a greater degree of difficulty than normal, which was reflected in the scoring with just two players playing to handicap. Leading the field home with a nett score of 71 was Matt Davidson (13) securing the mug as well as a qualification spot in the forthcoming Gold Mug play offs. For the record Matt had 40 hits around the front 9, and backed that up with 44 around the back and with the application of his 13 handicap resulted in the winning score. In ‘A’ grade Matt McKee (1) was the only other player to play to handicap finishing his round with a nett 72. In the runner-up position of that grade was Rowan Butcher (9) just the single shot in arrears to Matt with 73. David Morgan (18) must have been under some pressure from his regular playing partners, having to bring out his ‘A’ game to win ‘B’ grade with a score of 73. David was followed by a group of four players, all on 74 and at the conclusion of the required countback it was Kin Li (15) who was eventually awarded the runner-up position. Sixty players represented the ‘C’ grade division from which Neil Hayward (18) was the star, completing his 18 hole with a score of 73 from Trevor Walters (33) on 74.

Claiming the Pro pin on the 1st was Jim Packwood (21) his tee shot finishing 497 from a very difficult pin placement. The remaining nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Matt McKee on the 6th, Paul Harvison (6) on the 10th, Troy Henwood (15) on the 17th. Troy was fortunate he was playing in the men’s competition and not the women as Hannah Blundell put her tee shot just 5cm from the cup. Pro balls going down to those with 78 on a countback.

According to the official schedule of events book July is a very busy month for both Saturday and mid-week golfers, commencing next Saturday with the Don Bellamy Memorial Day which will be a 4BBB sponsored by Wendy, Jon & Mark Bellamy.
