The continuing unfavourable weather conditions continue to cause havoc for golfers of the Grafton District Golf Club. A major casualty of those conditions has been the forced postponement of the Grafton Women’s 61st May Tournament, originally scheduled for 28th-31st May. This tournament is regarded as one of the more prestigious events for women golfers in the region and State, with golfer from all over New South Wales and Southeastern Queensland regularly competing in the event. It is a shame for the organisers of the tournament who have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into the planning and promotion of the event and do not deserve this interruption to those plans. However, all is not lost as the tournament will now be held on 23rd-26th July, weather permitting. This is good news for our women golfers in particular and Grafton Golf Club in general, as well as the many sponsors associated with the event. It should be obvious to everyone that it was necessary to take the decision now to postpone the event to the revised date, which will enable all intending visiting and local golfers alike, the opportunity to alter their plans accordingly and confirm their participation at the revised time. For further details relating to this tournament, just contact any member of the women’s committee who will be able to assist you with any concerns you may have.
As advised last week, the Veterans Club Championships had also been postponed, originally scheduled for 20th and 27th May. These Championships will now be held on the 22nd and 29th July. Any enquiries relating to the Championship should be directed to the Veteran Captain, Glen Gardner.
There has been a lot of negatives in and around the Grafton Golf Club due to the weather interruptions. However there has been one positive which deserves special recognition. Members may not have been able to play golf and support the
Club and Pro shop because of those conditions, but they continue to support the Club in other ways, especially support of the Bistro. Members and visitors support of the Bistro facilities has been remarkable during this time, which was highlighted on Mother’s Day, with the inclusion of breakfast and two lunch sittings, there were something more than 400 meals served, which is a outstanding result. Unfortunately for some and the Club, not everyone could be catered for, bookings were that strong with some without a booking having to be disappointed and not be able to be included on the day.
Although the course proper is out of action, the three practice greens are open with Club management anticipating a chipping and putting competition in and around the practice area. The final details are yet to be determined, however the cost to take part will be $5 per player with all entry fees to be distributed as prize money each day. As soon as possible, details of this proposal will be advised via the Club Facebook page and Web site. Obviously the competition will be open to all members of the Club and should create some activity in and around the Club.
