Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Herron Cup Weekend
With rounds of 67 & 68 nett, 15 year old schoolboy, Sebastian Cox, playing off a handicap of just 13 easily won the 36 hole Herron Cup last weekend, which would be one of the greatest highlights of an already outstanding golf career for such a young golfer. The win by the Grafton Golf Club junior is more than a just reward for young Sebastian, as he can be seen almost daily on the Grafton course practicing his golf craft and all that hard work being recognised by securing the Herron Cup win is more than justified. No doubt the work ethic displayed by Sebastian will ensure a long and successful golf career at Club level, which will surely lead to big and better results as he progresses with his golf.
Things were a bit tighter in the Grafton Bowl component of the Lion Nathan sponsored tournament, with two players finishing on top in the gross competition. Both Jackson Wright and Tim Bartlett completed their 36 holes with a score of 152 gross, which required a play-off to determine the eventual winner. In the end it was Jackson Wright who was awarded the Grafton Bowl when he claimed victory on the 3rd play-off hole. It has been a big year for Jackson who won the 2023 Club Championships earlier in the year, his handicap currently stands at plus one and is sure to continually improve as time goes on. It was a great effort by Tim to qualify for the play-off, as the field included a host of top quality players, all desperate to win the Bowl.
Due to the large volume of trophies on offer over the two days of golf it is impossible to recognise all the successful golfers within this report. All results from the two days of golf is available on the Club notice board for you to check and determine if you were one of those winners.
Mid-Week Golf
It was a spectacular start to Mat McKee’s (2) round in last Thursday’s competition with a hole-in-one on the 1st yielding him 4 stableford points as a result. Mat then went on to record a further 41 points over the remaining 17 holes to easily win the day with 45, establishing a three point buffer over his nearest rivals, Bob Wicks (22) and Greg Tozer (15) both with 42. A quick check of Mat’s card reveals he recorded 7 birdies to go with his hole-in-one with just two bogies on the 8th and 12th holes. For those interested in such things Mat’s gross score equates to just 65 hits, 7 under par. A great round of golf.
Prior to that event on Tuesday the annual Herron Stakes Day was held, which was a 18 hole single Stableford. With much delight it was Billy Heath (26) who got the cash with an outstanding round of golf resulting in 43 points against his name. Two players, Bob Turns (17) and Keith Worthing (25) were next best on 40. It was one of the biggest Tuesday fields for some time attracting 121 starters, including many visitors no doubt in town for the Grafton races. Pro balls for this competition going down to 31 on a countback.
