Weekend Golf

With the continuing dry weather conditions, out course is fast returning to its absolute best, allowing for some extra run and very few, if any, wet patches remaining.  The improving conditions are reflected in the increase in the number of players returning, as well as the improvement in the scoring.  It was a busy weekend, just gone, with not only our regular Saturday men’s competition and on Sunday the Annual Naggers Cup competition was also held.  Scoring in Saturday’s competition was rather impressive which was highlighted by two players completing their rounds with the impressive result of 41 points for the 18 holes.  They were Ian Langley (13) and Rowan Butcher (6).  Following the completion of the countback process, Ian was declared the overall winner on the day, with Towan being awarded the win in division one.  These two players were followed by Matt Beetson (7) and Trevor White (12) both recording 40 for their efforts.  Matt was rewarded with the runner-up spot in division one, with Trevor Claiming the win in division 2 from Brenden Cotton (14) with 39.  Scores in division three were also of a very high standard in which Jesse Langford (17) finished on top of the leader board of that group with 38 just edging out the veteran and Club Life Member, John Macpherson (22) by just a single point in a very close contest.  In the nearest the pin department, Craig Langford (5) put his tee shot on the Pro pin hole, just 96cm from the cup.  Kin Li (15) claimed the 6th his tee shot 265cm from the pin, just inside John Macpherson (22) for the prize on that hole.  The 10th was taken out by Dwayne Doyle (9) his tee shot 152cm away, on the 17th it was Matt Beetson (7) who got the cash, his tee shot 161cm from the cup.  There were 30 pro balls on offer, and you had to be good to secure one as players required 34 on a countback to earn one.

The field in Sunday’s Naggers Cup may have been less than normal, but there was no doubting the quality of play with a team handicap of 13.88 the combination of Kaye (13) and Paul (24) Murdoch were too strong on the day winning the event with a nett score of 67.12.

They were followed by the pairing of Rhonda Studd (36) and Simon Loadsman (6) who completed their round in the American Foursomes format with a gross score of 85 which resulted in a nett of 69.25, following the application of their team handicap.  The 2nd runner-up spot was won by Soo McPherson (32) and Ian Langley (13) who compiled a score of 72.12.  The nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Kaye Murdoch (13) on the 1st, Irwin Perring (20) on the 6th, Janeen Roberts (16) on the 10th and Jason Casserly (11) claiming the 17th.

Midweek Competitions

The field in the midweek competition also continued to improve with 71 starters on Tuesday which included 62 veterans.  In the members division, Aiden Tredinnick (31) achieved the win with a outstanding score of 43 points, Jason Casserly (11) followed Aiden with a 41 on a countback from Greg McCaughey (24).  In the veteran’s division, Greg McCaughey’s 41 earned him the win from Stephen Castle (18) n 40, Ed Floroz (34) next best with 39 from Ray Chesher (21) on a countback.  Pro balls for the members component went down to 34 and in the veterans 34.

The Thursday competition was also well supported in which Jim Packwood (23) was the star with 39 points.  Jim was followed by John Frame (14) 38 with Nate Tattis (9) awarded the 2nd runner-up spot with 36, following a fur way countback.  There were 20 pro balls distributed to those with 32 or better on a countback.

Nominations for the Annual Rotary Charity Golf Day are still being accepted scheduled for Sunday 21st September.  The event also incorporates the Australian Par 3 Championships. It does not matter if you are a regular golfer or non-golfers, you are all welcome to participate.  The competition will take the form of an individual 9 or 18 hole event or alternatively a Ambrose competition is available.  Apart from the many prizes and trophies on offer a $10,000 hole-in-one prize is also on offer on the 10th hole.  The entry fee is just $40 per player with all proceeds going towards the many community projects supported by Grafton Rotary including several youth programmes.  To enter call the Pro shot on 566422255 or Rotary President, Chris Wheelahan on 0407003140.  The golf action on the day will commence at 10am.  Your support of the event is encouraged which will no doubt be of great benefit to the local community and will be a great day out.
