Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club 20th March 2023
Weekend Golf For the second week in succession our feature Saturday event has been a 4man teams competition, last Saturday it was the annual 18 hole Irish 4 Ball, sponsored by McMullan Contracting, attracting a field of just under 110 golfers. Taking out the overall prize with a score of 91 was the combination of John Want ((14), Trevor Walters (38), Riley Taylor (11) and Sam Wicks (11). Their card reveals a score of 44 points around the front, followed by 47 around the back, which was a reasonably strong effort and deserved the win. Just a single point separated the two top teams, with the team of Brendan Cleaver (5), Koopah Walters (14), Andrew Loy (11) and John Frame (13) putting together a score of 90 resulting in the first runner-up position. That team also scored 44 on the front nine, however they could only manage 46 around the back which was the difference between the top two teams. A countback was required to determine the 2nd runner-up position with two teams completing their rounds with 88 points. Following the countback process it was the team of Kingsley Smith (10), John Dahl (9), Dwayne Doyle (7) and Tim Bartlett (3) who were awarded with the prize. Frank Petty (14) was one of those players beaten in the team fight for the 2nd runner-up spot in the main competition. However he did make up for that disappointment by the nearest the pin Pro pin Prize on the 1st by putting his tee shot just 123cm from the cup. On the 10th it was Clive Taylor (16) who got the prize his tee shot recognised as the furthest away from the pin and that was 24.5metress away. John Thompson (9) claimed the 6th with Matt Worthing (2) the best on the 17th. Should your team finish with a score of 85 or better you have secured yourself a pro ball for the effort.
Following the Saturday competition on Sunday there was a Mixed event which also employed the Irish 4 Ball format, again sponsored by McMullan Contracting. Just missing out on one of the major prizes in the Saturday’s event, Frank Petty (14) did not miss on Sunday, being part of the eventual winners of the Sunday event. The remaining team members were Sue Petty (16), Henri Arnold (23) and Chrissy Danvers (22) who between them finished with 82 points. Finishing in 2nd place was the team many expected would be very hard to beat, that team comprised of David Morgan (13), Kaye Murdoch (10), Ron (28) and Sonya (30) Baker who finished just two points in arrears to the winning team on 78. Pro balls were handed out to all teams with a score of 73 or better.
Weekday Golf Last Tuesday’s Members and Veterans competitions attracted a combined field of 91 starters with the results in both categories identical. Chris Gannon (37) establishing a two shot buffer over his nearest competitor to record a victory with a score of 39 points. Bob Turns (18) who has been showing some really good form lately was named as the 1st runner-up with 37, one point clear of 2nd runner-up Jeff Hackett (5) with 36. Pro balls went down to those on 32 in the members competition and 29 in the Veterans.
The Thursday competition was a round of the Tallowood Challenge, sponsored by Mark Harvison and played under the Stroke format in which 49 players took up the challenge. At the completion of the 18 hole competition it was Sam Herd (20) who came out on top with an excellent 68 nett. Maungatane Tapp (20) would not be too disappointed with his score of 70 to take out the 1st runner-up spot from Matt Worthing (2) on 71. Pro balls going down to players with 74 nett.
Coming Events This coming Saturday, the men’s competition will revert back to individual play the event being a 18 hole single Stableford. The field will be depleted slightly with 25 regular Saturday golfers travelling up to Virginia Golf Club for the annual inter-club competition.
