Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club 17/05/2026

Weekend Competitions
There was no shortage of golf action on the Anzac holiday weekend at the Grafton Golf Club, with the regular men’s Saturday competition, which was followed by the annual Naggers Cup on Sunday. Firstly, the Saturday competition was a 18-hole single Stableford, which attracted a reasonably good field of 105 starters over the three playing divisions. The overall winner on the day was Allan Donaghey (11) with a handy score of 41 points. Allan was one of the 40 players in division one who took on the challenge. There were four players at the top of the division one leader board, apart from Allan, all completing heir rounds with 35 against their name. At the conclusion of a rather complicated countback Justin Rainbow (8) was declared the division one winner from Matt Katon (9). The remaining two players who fell on the negative side of the countback process were Terry Bowe (10) and Jake Frame (+3). Although Jake does not receive a special award for his 35 efforts, he did achieve a gross score of 2 under par 70 which does deserve special recognition, no doubt helped with the nearest the pin award on the 6th hole. In division two there were 31 starters, with a couple of Tracey’s at the top of the leader board, Stephen Tracey (17) with 36 from John Tracey (15) on 35. Michael Haris (21) was the leading player in the 34-man field in division three with the second-best overall score on the day with 40. Runner-up to Michael was Gary Pym (19) with 38 on a countback over Lachlan Pitt (30) and a Terry Hills Golf Club visitor, Ian Walters (20). The Pro-pin on the 1st was won by Danny Li (5), Tim Newsome (21) was the sharpshooter on the 10th, Tim’s tee shot finishing 84cm from the pin with Shane Pitt (18) claiming the award on the 17th. Should you have achieved a score of 32 or better you have earned yourself one of the 30 pro balls on offer.
On Sunday, the annual Mixed Naggers Cup was held, with a reasonably strong field of 30 players taking on the challenge. You had to be good to win with less than one shot separating the top two teams following the application of their respective team handicap, in the American Foursomes format competition. With a nett score of 63.75 (gross 87) the pairing of Mark (14) and Tracey (48) Dougherty just edged out the combination of Ian Langley (10) and Tania Doyle (13) with a nett score of 68.37 (77 gross). The 2nd runner-up spot went to Cheryl (30) and Wayne (12) Creighton with a nett score of 70.25 (86 gross). The nearest the pin awards went to Janeen Roberts (16) on the 1st, Karl Studd (12) the 6th, Tania Doyle (13) the 10th and Paul Murdoch (21) the 17th. All teams received a pro ball in recognition of their support for the event.
Mid-week Competitions
There were 92 starters in the Tuesday Members/Veterans competition with the results in both divisions identical. It has been a while since we have seen Graeme Rickwood (26) on top of the leader board, however on this occasion he did it in style with a very impressive 43 points. Graeme was followed by three players on 39 with Brian Dougherty (24) awarded the 1st runner-up spot from Len Jones (29) following the countback procedure. Just missing out on a place was Gary Cook (21) who had to settle for just a Pro ball for his 39. In the Veteran’s nearest the pin awards Dean Hayes (16) took out the 1st, Mick Carter (7) the 17th, Brian Napper (9) the 4th and Bradley Deece (7) the 14th. The “all in” nearest the pins went to Ken Dewar (9) on the 6th and Shayne Essex (14) the 10th. Pro balls went down to 32 on a countback in the Members division and 31 on a countback in the Veterans.
The Thursday competition, which was a round of the Tallowood Challenge series, sponsored by Mar Karvison, with a field of 60 players taking on the challenge which is a Stroke event. Two players finished on top with a score of nett 67 requiring a countback. In the end it was Mitchell Chapman (21) who was awarded the win from Anthony Donohoe (17). The 2nd runner-up spot went to Matt Katon (8) with 68. The nearest the pin awards went to Jim Packwood (21) on the 1st, Mark Hackett (8) the 6th, Mick Craw (scratch) getting more then his share by claiming both the 10th and 17th. There were 15 pro balls on offer going down to 75 nett on a countback.
