Grafton District Golf Club Putt's 'n' Pars, Ladies Chatter and Irrigation Update

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

With the combination of wet weather and the women’s 62nd Annual May Tournament there was very little men’s golf competition last week. The only competition, apart from Saturday’s Mixed event was the Tuesday members/veterans’ event for which there were 72 starters which included 63 veterans. A great supporter of Grafton golf and a past Club Champion, Greg Harvison (1) was the star on the day, taking out both divisions with a score of 37 points (20 around the front and 17 on the back 9). Added to that win Greg also captured the veterans nearest the pin award on the 1st, which was a positive start to his round. Runner-up in the veteran’s division was Sue Blake (33) with 36 on a countback from Rick Woelfl (16). In the members division Rick was the runner-up with his 36 from Mick Craw (1) on 35. Not only did Greg Harvison pick up the nearest the pin award on the 1st , but he also was successful on the 10th in the “all in” category, together with Terry Sampson (8) on the 6th. The remaining veteran’s pin awards went to Craig Heaslip (22) on the 4th with Terry Sampson claiming his 2nd pin award for the day on the 14th. Pro balls went down to 30 in both divisions.

Women’s Annual Tournament

Congratulations are in order for the Women’s committee who despite some very ordinary weather proceeded with their tournament with competition possible on Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately, golf was not possible on Friday. However, on Saturday, the AC Small Maxwell & Co sponsored Mixed American Foursomes was completed, which attracted almost 40 pairings. Results of the mixed event are available on the Club’s socials. The organising committee for the series put a great deal of effort into the tournament and deserve recognition for that effort and the ultimate success of the tournament.

Pennants

The Club is still looking for nominations for the 2026 N.R.G.A. Pennant competition, with those nominations required no later that 21st June for which the draw will be issued by 26th June. The proposed dates for the pennant series are 12th, 19th and 26th July with the finals scheduled for 2nd August. The appropriate nomination sheet is up on the Club notice board.

June Events

Plenty of golf action this month, commencing this Saturday (6th June) with the Clarence Valley Tyres 18-hole Stableford. That event will be followed on 13th June with the Grafton Motor group June Monthly Mug. Legacy Day is scheduled for Saturday 20th June. The final Saturday competition for June will be the Johnno & Dianna Johnson Memorial Day, which will take the form of a 18-hole 4-man Ambrose, with Bruce Wotton continuing his sponsorship of this important competition. The regular mid-week competitions will be in place with the Veterans Amgrow Challenge scheduled for Tuesday 9th June and the Tallowood Challenge to be held on Thursday 18th June.

Grafton Girls Chatter

Hi everyone,

This edition of the Chatter has taken a long time to compile. I hope you enjoy it as you reflect on what can only be described as an unforgettable week of golf and the 62nd May Tournament.

Course Update: Irrigation & Tree Management

After pausing all works on the course for the May Tournament, we are now getting back into our irrigation and tree management schedule.

Irrigation

on Monday we will assess conditions with Daniel to determine whether we can begin trenching without causing excessive damage to the course.

If conditions allow, work will commence on the 12th and 13th holes, and these holes will be temporarily taken out of play.

Please note this is weather-dependent. Further rain over the weekend may prevent us from proceeding due to soil moisture levels at depth.

Tree Management

If trenching cannot proceed from Monday through Wednesday, the greens staff will continue with crown raising (limb removal) and work on marked trees along the fairways from the 7th through to the 3rd.

This work may cause some minor disruptions to play. Daniel and I will keep members informed as early as possible regarding any impacts.

Thank you

Michael
