Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

A big week of golf at Grafton Golf Club, especially this coming weekend with the 36-hole Herron Cup, the premier golf competition of the year apart from possibly the Club Championships. This particular series had its beginnings in 1968 and has been a feature of Grafton golf ever Since. This year there is over $2,500 in prizes and trophies on offer, largely through the support of Hahn Brewery. The cost to enter this 36-hole competition will be $70 which includes the Pro pin. To play in just the 18-hole component for either Saturday or Sunday will be $35 entry fee, again including the Pro pin. To be eligible for the overall 36-hole Cup title, entrants must pay the $70 entry prior to teeing off on Saturday. It is not permitted to play a blinder on Saturday and then decide you will then play in the remaining 18 holes on Sunday, that is the reasoning for the $70 entry fee to be paid at the start. Winner of the 2025 Herron Cup was Scott Brown, who also won the cup in 2005 and 2017. The winner of the Grafton Bowl in 2025 was Matt McKee, who also has won that trophy on several previous occasions, which is held in conjunction with the Herron Cup and is determined on a stroke (gross) basis.

Prior to the Herron Cup as normal, was the Herron stakes day, which was scheduled for Tuesday 14th July this is another highlight of the July golf programme. In a lead up to all the golf action Naeco Blue 18-hole single Stableford held last Saturday with a strong field o 119 starters taking part. With a very impressive score of 43 points, Jason Casserly (11) took out the overall prize, which he had to do by way of a countback from Gary Pym (18) who was awarded the win in Division two for his impressive 43. Runner-up to Gary was Brett Paxton (16) with 38. The winning score in Division one was 40 achieved by Greg Robertson (11) from Tim Gooley (12) with 39. In Division three it was Jim Morrissey (22) who got the cash with 42 just the single point clear of Tony Rose (21) with 41. “Every body’s” mate, Tim Newsome (22), was the sharp shooter on the 1st claiming the Pro pin, his tee shot 268cm from the cup. The remaining nearest the pin awards went to David Wilks (13) on the 6th, Mick Carter (5) continued his recent run for pin awards on the 10th, with another regular winner Aiden Langford (5) picking up the 17th. There were 30 Pro balls handed out, and you needed at least 34 to receive one.

Mid-week Competition

Just under 100 starters turned out for the members/veterans Tuesday competition, which included 88 Veterans. The results in both divisions identical. It required a rather lengthy countback procedure to determine the various winners with five players on top of the leader board, all with 39 points. At the conclusions of that process Gary Nichols (22) claimed the top spot from Ted Strong (29), Dan Smidt (16). The remaining players on 39 included Andrew Connor (13) and Grant Rickwood (+2) now representing Nambucca Heads Golf Club. The “all in” nearest the pin awards went to Andrew Conor (13) on the 1st and Matt McKee (1) on the 10th. The veterans nearest the pin prizes went to Brad Mostyn (9) on the 1st, Ron Phillips (16) the 17th, Bob Turns (22) the 4th with Richard Maguire (22) picking up his 2nd pin award for the week on the 14th. Pro balls went down to 32 on a countback in both the members and veteran’s divisions.

One of the biggest fields for some time assembled for the Thursday competition with 75 starters. A countback was required to sort out the winners with both Matt Dougherty (16) and Peter Tracey (14) completing their 18 holes on 39 points with Matt finishing on the positive side of the countback. The 2nd runner-up prize was awarded to Paul Harvison (6) with 38. Natt Tattis (6) dominated the nearest the pin awards claiming both the 1st and 6th holes. Bill Dudgeon (17) took the 10th and Sebastian Cox (scratch) the 17th. There were 20 Pro balls on offer, going down to those on 33 on a countback.

N.R.D.G.A. Pennants

The 1st round of the NRDGA pennant series was held last weekend with Grafton teams successful in their two match ups. Playing at Maclean, Grafton’s No. 1 team defeated Ballina 3, 4.5 matches to 2.5. The Grafton 2 side were up against Yamba 3 with the Grafton side defeating Yamba 6 matches to 1, those matches also hosted by Maclean Golf Club. The 2nd round of the 2026 series to be held this coming weekend with Grafton 1 up against Byron Bay 3 at Yamba and Grafton 2 to play Maclean 4 at Casino. Both teams confident they can maintain their winning foray.
