Weekend Competition
The final round of the 2024/25 cycle of Grafton Golf Club monthly mug competition series was held last Saturday with a strong field of just under 100 starters in the Southside Butchery 18-hole Stroke event. The overall winner of the October Mug was division one player David Green (8) with a gross score of 4 over par 76, which equates to a Mug winning score of 68 nett. David was ultra consistent recording 38 hits on each 9 with his card recording 6 pars and 1 birdie on the front and a outstanding 8 pars around the back, coupled with an uncharacteristic double bogie on the 16th. David has now qualified for the previous Mug winners in the Gold Mug playoff’s scheduled for early next month. For the first time in a long time the countback process was not required to determine the various winners in all three divisions. In division one Simon Loadsman (6) was the winner with 71 nett from Tim Bartlett (4) on 72. Division two was won by Terry Brooks (16) with 70 followed by Kin Li (15) with 71. Chris Payne (19) topped the leader board in division three with 70, with Paul Starr (18) in hot pursuit of Chris, but was unable to bridge the gat completing his round on 71. You would have had to have some sympathy for Michael Gane (13) with his tee shot on the Pro pin 1st hole finishing an agonizingly 10cm from the cup, so near but so far from the hole in one. Still a nice way to begin your round of golf. The remaining nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Greg Harvison (1) on the 6th (220cm), Dek Pabian (24) on the 10 (230cm) and Brian Dougherty (24) on the 17th (332cm). A total of 35 Pro balls were on offer and to secure one you required a score of 77 or better to earn one.
Weekday Competitions
There is no doubting the popularity of the Tuesday’s members/veterans with 83 starters in last Tuesday competition which included 72 veterans. Results in both the members and veteran’s divisions identical. The overall winner of the day was Brett McConnell (9) with a more than outstanding score of 43 points. It has been some time since Brett has found himself at the very top of the leader board and this win should inspire him to even more wins soon. Brett added a further prize to his trophy had on the day with the “all in” nearest the pin prize on the 10th. Pro balls for the members went down to 33 on a countback and 33 also for the veterans. In the nearest the pin awards for Vets, Jef Hackett (6) was successful on the 1st and 4th, David Page (19) on the 17th with John Thojmpson (10) on the 14th. The remaining “all in “ on the 6th went to Derek Latimer (16).
The top of the leader board in the Thursday competition was jointly held by two players in the field of 60. Terry Brooks (17) and Justin Tattis (21) both recording 39 points. Terry eventually declared the winner with Justin having to be satisfied with the 1st runner-up spot. Second runner-up with 38 was Glenn Jackson (2). There were 20 Pro balls distributed to players with 33 or better on a countback. The nearest the pin awards went to Henri Arnold (15) on the 1st, Trevor Townsend (19) on the 6th, Geoff Crispin (16) on the 10th with Stephen Houlahan (10) picking up the 17th.
