Grafton District Golf Club Put's 'n' Pars

Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Once again wet weather has intervened in both the midweek and last Saturday’s competition with the course receiving a lot more rain than required, which resulted in disappointment for many of our regular golfers.

Last Tuesday’s members/veterans’ competition was the main casualty with no golf possible due to the wet conditions. However, the Thursday competition was able to proceed, although with a reduced field. The event was the May round of the Mark Harvison Tallowood Challenge, which is normally played as a stroke competition, but on this occasion reverted to the Stableford format due to the difficult playing conditions and reduced field of just 54 starters. With a score of 37 points, Peter Tracey (13) handled the conditions better than most to take out the overall prize on offer. Peter was followed by three players all with 36. The 1st runner-up went to a Woolgoolga visitor Mitch Perfrement (1), his 19 around the back 9 securing him with that position. Ron Sommer (16) once again featured in the major results, claiming the 2nd runner-up spot with his 36. Dylan Cleaver (18) was the remaining player with 36 unfortunately his 16 on the back 9 not enough to feature in the top three places following the countback and had to be satisfied with a pro ball for his effort. The nearest the pin awards went to Nate Tattis (6) on the first, Scotty Scott (29) the 6th, Mick Craw (1) the 10th with regular sharpshooter Mick Carter (6) claiming the 17th. There were 20 pro balls on offer which went down to 31 on a countback.

The Saturday competition was an 18-hole Stableford on this occasion Dougherty Property providing the trophies. Despite the threat of more rain and the course playing a little more difficult the usual there were a total of 128 starters, which comprised of 59 Division one players, 39 Division two with 30 in Division three. Billy Darby (10) was on top of the leader board and overall winner with 39 points. Sharing that top spot also with 39 was Greg Hayes (33) but had to settle for the win in Division 3 for that effort, following the required countback. Runner-up to Greg in that Division was Brian Dougherty (23) with 37. It was an easy win for Greg Tozer (14) in Division two who finished his day on 38, three points clear of Paul Hewitt (13) with 35. Division one players dominated the nearest the pin awards claiming all four trophies on offer, beginning with Jason Casserly (10) on the Pro pin 1st (185cm), Nigel deVoogd (10) shot on the 6th was rather impressive finishing 94cm from the cup. The 10th was awarded to Clint Corbettt (8) his shot finishing 134cm away. The 17th was claimed by Peter Sinclair (7) his shot 168cm from the cup. To claim one of the 30 pro balls on offer you required a score of 33 or better.

This coming Saturday the event will be a Mixed American Foursomes, a traditional competition and an important component of the Women’s Annual May Tournament. As has been part of that tradition the event is sponsored by AC Small Maxwell & Co. The golf action commences with a shot gun start at 10.30am.
