The 2025 Jacaranda Coaches and Greg Harvison Building and Design Club Championships have finally got under way, with the first two rounds of the 72-hole Championship series completed last weekend.  At the halfway stage of the Championships, Tony Blackadder (1) has established and 3 shot lead over defending champion Matt McKee (1).  Tony, who for many years has been a strong chance in previous championships put together two rounds of 72, 72 (144).  Matt’s score of 147 was made up of rounds of 74 & 73.  Three shots in arrears to Matt is the youthful Sebastian Cox (5) on 150 total with Grag Harvison (1) a previous Championship winner next on 151.  In A reserve Graham Tracey (9) leads on 171 with rounds of 86 & 85, followed by Damina Blair on 172 with Jason Casserly (8) a strong contender with 174.  Craig Woods (11) with round of 89 & 82 (177) has made a strong claim for victory in B Grade, establishing a four-shot lead in that grade from Brenden Cotton (15) on 175.  Next in line is Andrew Sear (12) on 176.  Just seven shots separate the top four players in C grade, with Dannis Pye (18) currently leading on 184.  Nigel deVoogd (17) is 2 shots in arrears on 186.  Two players, Billy Bishop (17) and Peter Tziavaras (19) also remain strong contenders in that grade with scores of 191.  The final two rounds of the Championship series are scheduled for this coming weekend with plenty of players in all four grades in contention for the Club and Grade Championships.  In the final round on Sunday the top four players in all four grades will be subject to a seeded draw, which will be determined following Saturday’s third round.

Saturday’s competition was not only round one of the Championships series, it also was the July Monthly Mug competition which was held in conjunction.  With an outstanding score of nett 67, Andrew J. Fletcher (18) dominated the 116-man field with a great score of 67 nett to claim the Mug. A quick check of Andrew’s card reveals he recorded 6 pars and threw in a couple of birdies to achieve that score in playing conditions which were not that easy.  In Division 1, Tony Blackadder (1) proved he was on top of his game with a well put together score of 71.  Jef Hackett (6) was just the one shot behind Tony with 72.  Playing to his handicap Jim O’Donohue claimed the win in Division 2 with a 72 from Steve Houlahan three shots in arrears to Jim with 75.  The competition in Division 3 was very close in which Paul Grieve (13) was the eventual winner with a nett 70 with Brenden Cotten (15) in hot pursuit with a 71.

In the nearest the pin department, Aiden Langford (9) would have thought he had the Pro pin on the 1st with his tee shot finishing 57cm from the cup.  That was until Craig Woods (11) came along and reduced that distance to 37cm to be awarded the Pro pin prize.  Glen Roots (17) had a big day with the nearest the pin prize claiming both the 6th (141cm) and 10th (171cm).  Matt McKee (1) taking out the 17th 259cm.  There were 36 pro balls on offer with those on 78 or better receiving one for that effort.

Once the Championship series is completed, we then have the Herron Stakes Day scheduled for Tuesday 15th July.  That event will be then followed by one of our featured events of the golf year, that is the Herron Cup.  This is a 36-hole competition to be held on Saturday and Sunday 19th & 20th July.  The defending Herron Cup winner is Greg Harvison with Neil Hayward the defending Grafton Bowl winner.  Nominations for both the Herron Stakes and Herron Cup are now open.
