Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf

Weekend Competitions
Plenty of golf action last weekend at the Grafton Golf Club with the Jacaranda 4BBB Stableford on Saturday, followed by a Jacaranda themed mixed 4BBB Stableford on Sunday. The Holiday Coast Meats & Small goods Jacaranda 4BBB Stableford competition had a field of 100 starters from which three teams all completed their 18 holes with a score of 48 points, which required a extensive countback to determine the various winners. In the end it was the combination of Tony Daly (18) and Paul Gadd (26) who were awarded the win. Their card reveals they had 21 on the front 9, backed up with a outstanding 27 around the back 9, which would be more than difficult to overcome in the countback procedure. For those who like to know such facts, Tony contributed scores on 8 holes, with Paul obviously contributing scores on the remaining 10. The 1st runner-up trophy was awarded to the combination of Daniel Blackman (8) and Brenden Cotton (18). The dominate player in that pairing was Brenden who contributed scores on 12 of their 18. Terrance Brooks (15) and Graeme Smith (20) were the final team on 48 and as a result were awarded the 2nd runner-up trophy for that effort. This paring started off strongly with 25 on the front but could only manage a further 23 around the back. The three teams on 48 were followed by a further four teams with 46 and all they received in way of a trophy was a Pro ball for that effort, which is a just reward for their good golf. In the nearest the pin department Craig Woods (9) gave his team, which included Chris Lambeth (24) a positive start to their Saturday campaign by capturing the Pro pin award on the 1st, Craig’s tee shot finishing 310cm from the pin. Unfortunately, Craig missed the birdie putt, and it was left to Chris to secure the two points, they eventually completed their 18 holes with a total of 45. Craig could be forgiven for missing the birdie putt as he was on their card for a total of 12 times. The three remaining par 3 holes went to Jason Casserly (12) on the 6th, Brett McConnell (6) the 10th and Peter Johnston (12) picking up the 17th. Pro balls went down to those teams with 44 on a countback.
In the Sunday mixed Jacaranda 4BBB Stableford event the usual hard-core supporters of mixed golf were in attendance which was eventually won by Glen Gardner (13) and Helen Packwood (32) who combined well for a total of 49 points. They were followed by Neil Hayward (20) and Janeen Roberts (18) with 47. Helen Packwood also won the women nearest the pin on the 1st with David Morgan (15) claiming both awards on the 6th and 17th, with no woman recording a shot on the 10th. Pro balls went down to 43.
Weekday Competitions
The highlight of Tuesday’s members/veterans’ competition was the hole-in-one achieved by Clive Taylor (15) on the 6th. The second hole-in-one with Peter Tziavaras’s effort on the previous Saturday. There were 70 starters in the event which included 64 veterans. Winning both divisions was Ken Watt (24) with 43 points four clear of the 1st and 2nd runners-up place getters, Nick Abrahall (20) and Dek Pabian (24) both with 39. The nearest the pin awards for the vets went to Dough Clark (24) on the 1st, Neil Hayward (20) the 17th, Brett McConnell (6) and Darren Hindom (23) on the 14th & 4th respectively. The “all in” on the 10th went to Paul Starr (18).
Three players dominated the Thursday competition all finishing with 36 points. They were Clint Corbett (9), Brad Mostyn (8) and Peter Hackett (37) and that was the order they finished in. The nearest the pin awards went to Brett McConnell (6) on the 1st, David Pate (14) the 6th, Clint Corbett (9) the 10th with John Thompson on the 17th. There were 12 Pro balls on offer going down to 32 on a countback.

Coming Events
This coming Saturday the Grafton Golf will be hosting one of their major golf events for the year the 36-hole Hahn Jacaranda Open. This year’s tournament entries boosted by 30 plus players representing Brisbane’s Virginia Golf Club, with a further large contingent of Armidale golfers also taking part. To qualify for the Open the cost will be $70 per player for both days which must be paid before teeing off on Saturday. Alternately the fees will be $40 for either of the 18-hole Stroke events on Saturday or Sunday. This tournament has been a major part of Grafton’s golfing programme since being first played in 1948 and has plenty of history against its name, including the great Greg Norman winning the title in 1973. The Saturday round will also include the November Monthly Mug and will also incorporate the Golf Mug play offs for the 2024/25 Monthly Mug series.
