Putt’s ‘n’ Pars, Ladies Golf & Men's Vets weekly wrap up Grafton Golf Club

Putt's 'n' Pars

Weekend Competition

It was a great day for golf at the Grafton Golf Club last Saturday, great weather and a course in excellent condition, attracting a field of almost 125 players in the Bolt Barn Skins Medley competition. In the individual scheme of things, there were seven players on top of the leader board, which required a rather long and complicated countback process. The seven players, all recording 40 points, include Matt Katon (13), Terry Brooks (17), Mark Newman (21), Craig Heaslip (25), Brett McConnell (10), Sue Petty (20) and Jason Disson (22). At the conclusion of the countback Matt and Terry were awarded the win and runner-up spots, respectively. The team winner were Peter Tracey (12), Craig Heaslip (25), Brett Paxton (14) and Geoff Howard (18) who combined well to record a total of 150 points. In the runner-up position with a team score of 146 were Brett McConnell (10), Rick Woelfl (19), Wayne Creighton (13) and Bradley Deece (8). In the skins component of the competition, results were recorded on 17 of the 18 holes, with no result recorded on the 18th. A complete list of the various skin winners is available in the Clubhouse, there are too many to acknowledge here, however for the record there were 28 individual players who shared the available skins cash on offer. The nearest the pins went to Clint Corbett (11) on the 1st, Tim Gooley (11) claimed the 6th, 10th went to John Frame (13) with the 17th going to Petr Sinclair (8). This particular event is becoming more popular each year and continues to attract players from many visiting Clubs, this year visiting players represented Yamba, Sawtell, Woolgoolga, Windaroo Lakes, and Beaudesert Golf Clubs. No doubt a contributing factor in the success of this competition is the involvement of the Bolt Barn and is anticipated their involvement and support will continue well into the future. Thank you Bolf Barn.

Mid-week Competitions

The Saturday competition obviously was preceded by the regular midweek competitions beginning on Tuesday with the member’s/veterans’ divisions with 92 starters, which included 85 veteran golfers. The member’s division was won by visiting golfer, Joshua Gorman(17) with 42 points on a countback from runner-up Billy Bishop (16), third place going to Geoff Crispin (17) with 40. The veteran’s division was won by Billy Bishop with 42 from Geoff Crispin on 40 the 2nd runner-up place awarded to Brett McConnell (10) on 39. Pro balls for veterans going down to 31 and same for the members.

A three-way countback was required to sort out the winner in Thursday’s competition with Mitchell Chapman (26), Tim Bartlett (5) and Craig Woods (8) all recording 39 points and that was the order they finished in. To qualify for a Pro ball, you required a score of 33 or better on a countback to earn one.

Veteran’s Open Day

On Monday (22nd September), the Grafton Golf Club Veteran’s hosted their annual open day with just under 100 players participating. The event attracted golfers from all over the Northern Rivers area who obviously appreciated the excellent playing conditions, both weather wise and the course conditions with those visitors dominating the results in the two divisions. In division 1 (+5 to 19.8 handicap range) the winner was Ballina Golf Club member Stephen Craven (14) with a score of 41 points. Stephen was followed by Grafton golfers Leon McPhee (11) with 40 from Stephen Castle (18) on 38. Another visiting golfer dominated in division 2 (19.9 to 54 handicap range), David Glass (30) representing Murwillumbah with 41. David was then followed by two Grafton contenders with 39, Gary Cook (23) and Graeme Smith (20).

Player Safety and First Aid

All Grafton Golf Club members as well as visiting golfers are reminded that currently it is snake season and all should be aware of their presence on the course and surrounds. If someone is bitten, snake bite kits are available at the Pro shop and the Greens shed. Should that happen contact the Pro shop or Clubhouse immediately to enable assistance to be rendered without delay and avoid moving the patient. Refer to Club notice board for all relevant protocols relating to snake and spider bites.

Vets Open Day

On Monday 22nd we had our annual NRVGA vets open day

Nighty three players from 11 clubs played on a glorious day and our course was presented in a excellent condition. I would like to thank my fellow committee members for their effort over the last month and also green staff for their work

This day would not be successful if we did not have the support of all the staff and volunteer's kitchen staff bar staff and the main club committee so thank you everyone for making this day a huge success. Nighty three player completed their round in 4 hours 15 minutes and the raffles and presentation went very smoothly.

Hopefully the visitors had a great day and go away with a good impression of our club
