ree

It was a great week for golf at the Grafton District Golf Club last week, why would it not be with the course in the best condition possible, and as a result there were some really outstanding scores being recorded.

Weekday Competition

Beginning last Thursday, for which there were 56 starters, Craig Langford (5) produced a amazing score of 45 points for his 18 holes to clearly win the event. His nearest competitor, three points in arrears was Scott Acton (16) with 42. Stephen Houlahan (10) had a real day out, not only claiming the 2nd runner-up spot with 41, but also monopolising the nearest the pin awards by taking out both the 1st and 6th holes prizes. Clint Corbett (7) claimed the 10th with the always reliable Ray Evans (23) picking up the 17th. 34 points was the score you required to claim a pro ball. Prior to that of curse was the Member/Veteran Tuesday competition for which there were 82 starters, including 74 Veterans. The results in both divisions being identical. 40 was the leading score on the day achieved by Ed Florez (34). Next in line was Leon McPhee (10) with 39, followed by Dougie Hughes (13) with 38 on a countback from Michael Gane (13) and David Morgan (14). Ray Evans again featured in the nearest the pin awards claiming the 6th with Peter Brennan (18) putting his hand up for the prize on the 10th. The awards for the Veterans went to Stephen Castle (18) on the 1st, David Page (17) on the 4th with Craig Woods (8) on the 14th. Pro balls for the members went down to 32 on a countback as well as the Veterans.

Weekend Competitions

Of course, the feature event of the week was the December monthly mug, a 18 Hole Stroke competition, which attracted a good field of just under 100 starters. Once again it was a Langford who received the major prize on this occasion Aiden Langford (8) who got the mug and has now qualified for the Golf Mug playoffs to be hel towards the end of next year. Aiden’s winning score of 67 nett was matched by Brett McConnell (6) who had to be satisfied with the win in Division one following the countback. Runner-up to in that grade was Matt McKee (+1) with 69. Again, a countback was required to sort out Division 2 with both Greg Tozer (16) and Peter Tracey (14) both recording 69 with Greg named as the winner in that grde. It was a close contest in Division 3 in which David Pattison (23) was the winner with 70. Billy Heath (21) tried very hard to catch David but just could not bridge the gap settling for the runner-up spot with a 71. Brett McConnell added to his grade win rather significantly by winning the Pro pin award on the 1st. Neil Hayward (20) claimed the 6th, Alfie Groves (14) picking up the 10th and Stephen Houlahan (9) the 17th to add to his weekly total nearest the pin awards, making it a total of three for the week. Pro balls went down to 75 on a countback.

On Sunday the final mixed event for the year was held with 36 starters. The competition was completely dominated by Sue Petty (20) and Henri Arnold (15) with a great score of 58.5 in the American Foursomes format event. They recorded 36 hits on both the front and back 9’s and with the application of their 17.5 team handicap were uncatchable. The runner-up spot was awarded to Neil Hayward (20) and Christine Danvers (25), this combination apparently struggled on the greens, however still managed a respectable score of 62.5 to claim that result. The nearest the pin awards went to Jen Townsend (2) on the 1st, Billy Heath (20) on the 6th, Lee Daley (26) on the 10th with Brett McConnell (6) the star on the 17th.
