Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Weekend Competition
Last Saturday, at the Grafton District Golf Club, one of our more unique team’s event of the year was held, a 18 Hole Texas Scramble, for which there were just over 100 starters in the Jim O’Donohue sponsored competition. In a closely fought contest, just 3 points separated the top three teams. With a team score of 137 points the combination of Bill Darby (13), Stephen Houlahan (10), David Green (7) and Gary Pym (20) secured the major prize. The runner-up trophy was awarded to the team comprising of Ben Brown (13), John Atherton (28), David Wilks (15) and Dean Hayes (20) who put together a team score of 134. Just a single point separated this team from the 2nd runner-up combination of Jim O’Donohue (8), Craig Woods (8), Mark O’Donohue (18) and Ken Dewar (12) who had accumulated a score of 133 for their 18-hole effort. The regular nearest the pin awards were conducted with Gerry McMullan (19) and Ton Daly (18) sharing the Pro pin award on the 1st, both players placing their tee shots in just 70cm from the cup. On the 6th it was Rowan Butcher (5) who got the cash, his tee shot 176cm away. Matt Beetson (6) shot on the 10th finished 290cm away, good enough to secure the prize. Jim O’Donohue (8) claimed the 17th with a tee shot that finished 287cm away. Pro balls went down to teams with a score of 124 or better.
Weekday Competitions
Scores in last Thursday’s competition were rather impressive with three players completing their rounds with 37 points, which required a rather extensive countback process to determine the winners. In the end Dean Carroll (15) was awarded the win from John Dahl (8) and Bob Perl (16) who were awarded the 1st & 2nd runner-up trophies, respectively. The nearest the pin awards went to Paul Harvison (7) on both the 1st and 10th holes, Sebastian Cox (1) took out the 6th with Craig Woods (8) continuing his dominance in the various pin awards, this time claiming the 17th. There were 20 Pro balls on offer going down to 33 on a countback.
In th Tuesday competition there were almost 90 starters, which included 82 Veterans. The member’s division was won by Terry Brooks (14) with a outstanding of 41 points, just the single point ahead of Aiden Tredinnick (28) on 40. The ball rundown for the members went down to 32 on a countback. The nearest the pin awards went to Leon McPhee (11) on the 6th, with Geoff Dickinson (13) claiming the 10th. From the 82 Veterans in the field, Terry Brooks (14) was the leading player with 42. The 1st runner-up player was Stephen Houlahan (10) with 39 from Maclean visitor Stewart Lewis (21) with 38. In the nearest the pin department, Bob Turns (20) claimed the 1st, Matt Dougherty (15) on the 17th, with Craig Woods (8) awarded the prize on the 14th. The available pin prize on the 2nd was not won. Pro balls for the Vets went down to 31 on a countback.
Coming events
The feature event for this week will be the December Monthly Mug, scheduled for this coming Saturday, which has received the support of Australis Pizza. The event will also incorporate round one of the Bendigo Bank Summer Consistency Trophy. This series is conducted over 8 rounds with the final round to be held on Saturday 24th January 2026. In these 8 round series only your top 6 scores will count in the final tally, therefore you can afford to miss a round or two and still feature in the results.
For those supporters of mixed golf, your final mixed competition for the year is scheduled for this Sunday 7th December. According to the official programme book the competition will take the form of American foursomes and all the trophies on offer will be centred around the theme of Christmas.
