Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

There has been plenty of golf action this month for members and visiting golfers to the Grafton District Golf Club championship course. It all began with the 72-hole Club Championships, which was eventually won by Tony Blackadder earlier in the month. That series was followed last Tuesday with the annual Herron Stakes day with 124 starters taking part. Competition at the top of Tuesday’s leaders board was very tight with just the single point separating the top three players. Two players, Tony Pidcock (25) and Nigel deVoogd (17) completed their rounds with a outstanding score of 43 points against their names. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner, and following the countback process Tony was awarded the win with Nigel having to be satisfied with the 1st runner-up position. Jim Ford (32) would be more than satisfied with his great score of 42 to be awarded with the 2nd runner-up spot for that effort. One of the many visitors who played that day was ex Grafton golfer, who now represents Nambucca Heads Golf Club, was Grant Rickwood. Grant began his golf career as a junior with Grafton Golf Club and now plays off a handicap of plus 2. Grant’s score for the day was 34 which was not a effort as he does not get to play his “home” course all that often. The event was followed on Thursday with another 18-hole Stableford for which countback was required to sort out the winners. Justin Tattis (24) was eventually declared the winner from Ken Watt (31) both players recording 40 points.
Apart from the Championship, one of the feature events of the year, the Herron Cup was held last weekend, which is decided over 72 holes, with the major trophies on offer being the Grafton Bowl, which is decided on stroke results and the Herron Cup which is determined on handicap. Results in the Grafton Bowl was a repeat of the Club Championship with the winner and runner-up in this component were almost identical to the Championships, except on this occasion the results were reversed with Matt McKee (scratch) taking out the Bowl from Tony Blackadder (scratch) securing the runner-up spot. Both golfers returned a gross score of 148 strokes for the 36 holes and required a play-off to decide the winner. Following the completion of the mandatory three-hole play-off, Matt was determined as the winner. Both golfers deserve to win the Bowl, but unfortunately there can only be one. In the Heron Cup, it was Scott Brown (5) who was the victor with a two-round total of 142 nett, joining a long list of previous winners dating back to 1968. This is not the first time Scott has taken out this blue-ribbon event, taking out the top prize in 2005 as a junior and followed that up in 1017 with his second win. To secure the Herron Cup for the third time is a great effort. Due to the generosity of the Herron Cup and Grafton Bowl sponsors, Lion, there are too many prize winners of the two divisions to list in this report. However, a complete list of all the various winners over the two-day tournament is available on the Club notice board. Congratulations to all those winners and the event sponsors, for enabling this important and prestigious competition to continue for as long as it has. One player who may not have featured in the major results, but still managed to profit from his participation in the series was Dylan Cleaver (17) who scored a hole-in-one on the 1st on Saturday, which not only resulted in the Pro-pin award for that day, but also picked up the hole-in-one bonus prize, which was on offer. As there has not been a hole-in-one recorded for quite some time the bonus he received was the maximum amount of $1000, which no doubt was a golfing highlight of Brendan’s career and added to his enjoyment of the game for that day.
This week our Veteran’s 2025 Championships begin, the second and final round of this 36-hole series is scheduled for next Tuesday 29th July. As soon as those results are known they will be advised via the Club’s social media as well as this column.
