Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Midweek Competitions
The midweek competitions at the Grafton Golf Club continue to flourish with the fields in both the Tuesday and Thursday getting back to some form of normality, following the extended wet conditions experienced over the past two or three months. Last Tuesday’s members/veteran’s competition was no exception with just over 100 starters in the 18-hole Stableford event. The field also comprised 80 veterans, with the results in both divisions identical. Three players dominated the leader board with scores of 43 point, which required the implementation of the countback process to determine the various winners. In the end it was Peter Smyth (34) who was declared the overall winner, recording 18 on the front 9 and backed that up with a exceptional 25 around the back which was unbeatable in the countback procedure. Following Peter, Ray Hickay (38) made a welcome return to the winner’s circle formally recognised as the 1st runner-up with a consistent 22 for the first 9 and 21 around the back. It has been sometime since Ray has featured at the top of the competition and this return to form should result in a reduction in his handicap as a reward for his good golf. Next in line to be recognised as the 2nd runner-up for his 43 was Gerry McMullan (18) who put together identical scores to Ray Hickey. In the veterans nearest the pin awards, Neville Higham (19) claimed the 1st with Bill Dudgeon (19) successful on the 17th. Brad Mostyn (10) cleaned up both of the “all in” pin prizes on both the 5th and 10th holes. Pro balls in the veteran’s division went down to 33 on a countback and 35 in the members division.
The Thursday competitions was also well patronised with 59 starters and once again the competition was very tight at the top of the leader board with three players all completing their 18 holes with a score of 41 points. Following the required countback it was Chris Wheelahan (13) who was awarded the win from Glenn Jackson (20) and Aiden Tredinnick (29). The nearest the pin awards went to Peter Herden (16) on the 1st, Jon Bellamy (9) on the 6th, Brett McConnell (9) the 10th with Nate Tattis (9) picking up the 17th. There were 20 pro balls distributed going down to 34 on a countback.
Weekend Competitions
In perfect weather conditions, there were 103 starters in the Saturday competition with some very impressive scores recorded on the day. None better than Peter Tziavaras (21) who put together a great score of 43 points to claim the overall win. Peter was followed by three players all on 41. They included Jake Lambeth (15) for which he was awarded the win in Division 2 from Luke Worthing (16) on 38. Both Jim Packwood (22) and Craig Heaslip (25) recorded 41 which resulted in them being awarded the win and runner-up positions respectively in Division 3. A countback was also required to sort out Division 1 with John Thompson (10) eventually awarded the win from Graham Tracey (10) both players recording 38. Glenn Brooks (29) got his round underway in a positive way by taking out the Pro pin on the 1st, the 6th was won by Brian Hewitt (29), Luke Worthing (16) claimed the 10th with Matthew J. Dougherty (9) taking out the prize on the 17th. There were 30 Pro balls on offer, and they went down to players with 34 or better on a countback.
Coming event
The Saturday competition this week will be the October monthly mug on this occasion being sponsored by Southside Butchery. This will be the final round of the monthly mug series for this year, with the 2026 series to begin in November. The mug winner this Saturday will join the eight previous mug winners for this year in the Gold Mug playoffs to be held in November. Due to course closures three rounds of the 2025 mug series were not held and as a result the field in the Golf Mug playoffs will be reduced accordingly.
