Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

Another week of interruption free from golf, which has resulted in improved fields and even better scoring. The return to some form of normality appreciated by all golfers.
Weekday Competitions
Commencing with last Tuesday’s (16th September) members and veterans Stableford competition with 98 starters taking advantage of the excellent playing conditions on offer. The field of 98 included 83 veterans who no doubt were tuning up their game for their open day scheduled for Monday. Results in both competitions were identical with Jock Macpherson (22) the winner of the day capturing both division with a more than commendable 42 points, his card revealing 19 around the front 9, followed by a very impressive 23 around the back. Runner-up in the event was Rick Woelfl (20) who accumulated 41, 2nd runner-up spot going to John Thompson (1010 with 40. The nearest the pin results for the veterans went to Frank Petty (17) on the 1st with Mick Craw (3) picking up the 17. The overall nearest the pin awards went to Stephen Summerell (13) on the 6th and Jon Bellamy (9) on the 10th. Pro balls going down to 34 for the members and 32 on a countback in the veterans.
The Tuesday competition was followed on Thursday (18th September) with the September Tallowood Challenge, which is played under the stroke format of competition. Winner on the day was on of out larger than life characters, Ron Sommer (19)_ who was a very impressive winner, recording a nett score of 68, which was a great way to celebrate his birthday. It was a big week for “young Ron”, sponsoring the Tuesday veteran’s competition, winning on Thursday, together with his birthday. With a nett score of 69, Craig Langford (7) ended up with the runner-up prize followed by Billy Darby (15) with 71. Craig also picked up the nearest the pin prize on the 1st. Pro balls going down to 76 on a countback.
Weekend Competition
A couple of Grafton’s great supporters of Grafton golf, Dennis Pye and Chris Wheelahan provided the sponsorship for last Saturday’s 18-hole American foursomes competition with 38 teams competing. Once again, the Lanford name featured in the results with Craig (7) and Aiden Langford (10) combining to take out the event with a gross score of 71 which equates to 64.62 nett following the application of their handicap of 6.38. A quick check of their card reveals that they recorded 13 pars, 1 birdy plus a couple of bogeys, very consistent golf. The combination of Gary Cook (23) and Danny Li (5) finished up with the runner-up prize with a nett score of 67.50. The 2nd runner-up spot went to a couple of Saturday regulars, Greg Tozer (17) and David Wilks (16) who put together a gross score of 81 for a nett 68.62. Two of the early favourites for the event were Matthew Worthing (6) and Willow Harris (Plus 1) who tried very hard to catch the leaders, however their team handicap of 1.88 made it just a little more difficult finishing with a nett score of 69.22 to claim 4th place. Brandan Cleaver (5) must wonder what he has to do to achieve a hole-in-one as his tee shot on the Pro pin 1st hole finished just 14cm from the cup, it must have looked great from the tee. The 6th nearest the pin went to John Frame (13), Scott Brown (4) claimed the 10th with Irwin Perring (19) picking up the 17th. Pro balls went down to teams with 71.7502 or better.
Note
Next Saturday the event will be the Bolt Barn Medley 18 hole Skins game. The golf action will commence with a shotgun shtart at 10am.
There is one golf result that deserves special recognition, although it would have been advised earlier in our women golfers results. That is the remarkable score recorded by Rhonda Studd on 17th September at which time Rhonda finished with a score of just 58 nett. At that time Rhonda had a gross score of 93, which no doubt would have been noticed by the women’s handicapper and would result in Rhonda’S handicap receiving a signigicent cut. This is a great effort by Rhonda, who puts a lot into the Golf Club in general and her golf in particular and no doubt with this result behind her will see her handicap trajectory continue in downwards direction. It would be many years since a result of 58 was ever recorded in either men’s or women’s golf divisions, and is a record that will remain for a long time into the future. Congratulations Rhonda on that result.
