Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club

There have been some very impressive scores achieved at the Grafton District Golf Club in recent times, such as the 47 points recorded by Andrew Fletcher on Tuesday 21st July, which on a individual basis could be considered the best score of the year. However, that was not the circumstances, as in last Tuesday’s Members/Veterans competition, Neil Hayward, playing off a healthy handicap of 22, managed to best Andrew’s effort with a remarkable 49 individual Stableford points to easily win both the Members and Veteran’s division competitions. Neil began his round with just the single point on the 1st but went on to record 24 on the front 9 and backed that up with a further 25 on the back 9. This round follows on from Neil’s recent win in the 36-hole Herron Cup, capping off a unbelievable two or three weeks of golf. As a reward for his 49 Neil’s handicap was reduced by four, so now will have to get used to just being eligible for one shot per hole on a Stableford scheme of things. Neil may have had the round of the year, but Ron Sommer (16) had the shot of the day, recording a hole in one on the 1st at the same time picking up the hole in one bonus of $1,000 for the effort. There were 100 starters in that particular competition including 91 Veterans and runner-up to Neil in both the Veteran and Member divisions was Dougie Hughes (12) with 42 with Athol Green (20) awarded the 2nd runner-up spot with 41. In the Members division it was Daniel Blackman (8) who gained the 2nd runner-up spot behind Neil and Doug. The “all in” nearest the pin went to Kevin Essex (28) on the 6th and John Macpherson (22) the 10th. In the Veteran division Glen Gardner (15) claimed the 17th, Mick Craw (scratch) the 4th and Norm Burt (16) the 14th. Pro balls going down to 36 in the Members and 33 on a countback in the Veterans.

Last Saturday’s Clarence Valley Surveys Monthly Mug had a field of 110 starters all vying for the top prize, the competition. Tow players finished on top of the leader board with 67 nett, Ron Phillips (16) and Paul Grieve (10). At the conclusion of the countback process Ron was awarded the Mug win and now qualifies for the Golf Mug Play-off. Paul was awarded the win in Division one from Dwayne Doyle (12) with 69. Division two was taken out by Bill Dudgeon (16) with 68 from Paul Hewitt (14) on 72. A countback was required to sort out Division three with both Terry Barnes (32) and Peter Tziavaras (20) both completing their rounds with 72. In the end it was Terry who was awarded the Division win for is effort. The nearest the pin prizes went to Ian Langley (11 on the 1st, Greg Hayes (32) the 6th, Greg Harvison (2) the 10th Bradley Deece (8) and Dwayne Doyle (12) picking up the 17th. There were 35 pro balls on offer going down to 77 on a countback.

The Thursday competition had 60 starters with Zac Cotton (33) claiming the top prize with 39 points on a countback from Graham Plater (27). Nate Tattis (6) was awarded with 2nd runner-up prize as a just reward for his 37 on a countback from Peter Tracey (14). 20 pro balls were distributed going down to 33 on a countback. The nearest the pin prizes went to Peter Tracey (14) on the 1st, Ian Walters (19) the 6th, Benjamin Holden the 10th and Anthonyt Donohue the 17th.

Pennant Finals

Grafton Golf Club hosted the finals of the N.R.G.A. Pennant series for 2026 with the series hindered with a couple of the rounds washed out. However, that was no concern for Glen Gardner’s Grafton’s No. 1 Team who were successful in their quest for pennant success. The Grafton pennant squad comprised of Matt Beetson, Andrew Sear, Justin Rainbow, Steven Camac, Glenn Gardner, Simon Loadsman, Tim Gooley, Randall Dow, Matt Katon and Paul Grieve. With the 5 best scores to count in the final tally, the Grafton team finished with 176 points followed by Ballina on 168, Ocean Shores with 161 and Byron Bay 160. The finals are normally decided on a match play basis, but as a consequence of the washouts was determined on the Stableford format. Congratulations to the Grafton contingent who were worthy winners despite the home course advantage and look forward to the 2027 series with confidence.

The feature for this Saturday is the Studdy sponsored 18-hole 2 Man Ambrose. The main playing condition relating to this event is that each player must contribute at least 5 drives each and be recorded on your score card accordingly. The obvious feature of the August programme is the 2026 Club and Division Championships the four rounds scheduled for 22nd,23rd, 29th, 30th of the month and once again sponsored by Greg Harvison Building & Design and Jacaranda City Coaches.

Congratulations to the Grafton Golf Club Pennants Team on winning the Golf Northern Rivers Division 7 Pennants Championship at Maclean Golf Club on Sunday, 2 August 2026.
