Weekend Competition

It was a ice change to our regular and normal Saturday men’s competition format last Saturday at the Grafton Golf Club with the Dean and Corrie Hayes 18-hole American Foursomes, which attracted a strong field of 110 starters. Taking out the winner’s prize for the day was the pairing of Craig Langford (6) and Aiden Langford (9) who recorded a gross score of 72 and following the application of their team handicap of 5.63 finished with a nett result of 66.37. In hot pursuit of the leaders was the combination of Daniel Blackman (6) and Brendan Cotton (6) who put together a gross score of 73, which resulted in a nett score of 66.62 just 0.25 of a shot behind the winning duo. The 2nd runner-up pairing of Shane Essex (15) and Gerry McMullan (20) also put in a strong claim for the win with a nett score of 66.87, just 0.5 of a shot in arrears to the winners, their team handicap of 13.13 not just enough to catch the leaders despite putting together a gross score of 80. Scores obviously were not only very tight at the top of the leader board, but in the Pro-pin on the first it was a very tight result with Tim Gooley (10) claiming the prize by just 2cm, his tee shot finishing 131cm from the cup. The unlucky player whose tee shot was 133cm from the pin was great clubman Karl Studd (18) who would be forgiven for thinking he had it won. The nearest the pin award on the 6th was won by Brendan Cleaver (5), the 10th went to Steve Camac (9) his tee shot also very close, a mere 32cm from the cup. Paul Langford (6) kept the family name amongst the various winners by taking out the 17th. To qualify for a pro ball your team had to achieve a score of 72.62 nett to secure one. Dean and Corrie have been supporting this event for some time now, which is very much appreciated.

Next Saturday the men’s competition will be a 18-hole Stableford . The field will be depleted a little with a considerable contingent of out regular Saturday golfers travelling to Armidale for the return leg of a inter club competition.

Weekday Competitions

It was a tough competition to win last Tuesday with three players on top of the leader board, which required a more than interesting countback to decide the winners. In the end it was Mick Carter (7) who was awarded with the well-deserved win, to go with his nearest the pin prize on the 10th. On the negative side of the countback process was 1st runner-up, Paul Danvers (14) who with 19 points n the back nine could not match Mick’s 21. The remaining player with 39 was John Thompson (9) his 18 on the back not enough to catch Mick and Paul and had to settle for the 2nd runner-up spot. There were 70 starters in the Tuesday member/veterans competition from which there were 20 pro balls on offer for which you required a score of 33 or better on a countback. Sebastian Cox (1) did not go home empty handed, claiming the nearest the pin prize on the 6th.

A field of 52 players contested the Thursday competition from which Ron Phillips (15) was the standout golfers on the day with 39 points. Ron was followed by Peter Hackett (37) with 38 on a countback from Stephen Houlahan (10) also on a countback from Aiden Langford (9). The nearest the pin awards went to Tim Brtlett (4) on the 1st, Nigel deVoogd (13) on the 6th, Craig Langford (6) the 10th and Stephen Houlahan (10) the 17th. Pro balls going down to 34 on a countback.
