Putt’s ‘n’ Pars from Grafton Golf Club
Weekend Competition
Despite the prevailing weather conditions being absolutely great for golf last Saturday, the playing numbers were down slightly in the Bob Pike and Legacy Day event, attracting just under 90 players.
The Grafton Golf Club course could not be in better condition and that was reflected in the high standard of play and scores. The two major trophies on offer were the Legacy Cup and Dinner’s Cup with Craig Langford (5) capturing the Legacy Cup with an excellent score of 40 points. The Digger’s Cup was won by Darron King (20) with a score of 35 points against his name. In ‘A’ grade there were 28 starters in which Peter Sinclair (8) was the leading player with 39 just the single point over Steven Camac(6) with 38. Just the one point separated the winners in ‘B’ grade in which there were 32 starters. With a score of 37 Sebastian Cox (13) was the leading score of that group from Clive Taylor (15) who completed his 18 holes with 36. The remaining 38 players contested the ‘C’ grade division with Tony Daly (20) completely dominating that group with a well-earned score of 39 to his name. The runner-up spot in that grade went to Ron Phillips (17) three points in arrears to Tony with 36.
There were some fairly strong efforts in the nearest the pin side of things in which we find Rob Miller (13) winning the Pro pin on the 1st with his ball finishing 100cm past the cup. On the 6th Damian Blair (15) got the cash with Glen Gardner (11) putting his tee shot on the 10th just 81cm from the cup. Jackson Wright won the prize on the 17th unsure of the distance as the appropriate distance marker was not brought in. To secure a pro ball you needed a score of 33 or better on a countback.
For the regular Saturday players this coming Saturday will be the July Monthly Mug, on this occasion being sponsored by Disco Marine and as always will be played under the stroke format. The eventual winner of the mug will then progress to the Golf Mug playoffs scheduled for later on in the year.
Mid Week Competitions
Last Thursday’s competition saw a field of 51 players take on the challenge with just two points separating the top three players. The leading player was Bruce Baxter (21) with 39 points, Bruce was followed by Brett McConnell (8) who achieved a score of 38. Three players, Wayne Creighton (14), Glenn Gardner (11) and Brendan Breitnauer (13) all finished with 37 with Wayne eventually being awarded the 2nd runner-up prize following a countback. The nearest the pin awards went to Craig Woods (10) on the 1st, David Morgan (13) the 6th, Jim Packwood (21) the 10 with Tony Blackadder (4) the sharp shooter on the 17th. Pro balls going down to 34 or better.
The Tuesday competitions attracted fields of 84 players in the members competition which included 80 Veteran’s in their medley competition. The leaderboard results in both competitions were identical. Geoff Shepherd (26) left no doubt who was the star on the day by winning both divisions with an outstanding score of 43 points. Six points clear of his nearest rivals, Stephen Summerell (13) and Gary Pym (22), both compiling 37 for their 18 hole. Pro balls went down to those on 31 in the Vet’s and 33 in the members competition.
Veterans Top Gun Shootout
The leader board in the Coopers Brewery Top Gun Shootout remains very tight with just three points separating the current top 10 qualifying spots. Geoff Shepherd currently leads the qualifiers with 42. Geoff is followed by three players on 42, Sam Davison, Scotty Scott and John Dougherty. On 41 are Michael Beehag, Gary Bondfield with the remaining players all on 40. They are in order, Darron Hindon, Peter Smyth, Peter Rouse and Gary Pym. Also on 40 is Doug Clark who is currently the first reserve qualifier. The final opportunity to qualify for the final is scheduled for Tuesday 19th September, still plenty of time to play your way into that final.
